Vocabulary & Follow Up Ideas for Teachers

 

 WORDS Charlie would like the students to know before they see the show.

(Create your own playful child-friendly definitions of these words as they relate to the story ROCKgarden Party!)

 

 

  1. Drought:  (noun) A prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall; a shortage of water resulting from this.synonyms:dry spell, lack of rain, shortage of water "this year's drought was devastating to cotton growers"

  2. Empathy: (noun) The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

  3. Adaptable:  (adjective) Able to adjust to new conditions. "rats are highly adaptable to change" synonyms:flexible, versatile, cooperative, accommodating, amenable "competent and adaptable staff"

  4. Oblivious: (adjective) not aware of or not concerned about what is happening around one. "she became absorbed, oblivious to the passage of time" synonyms:unaware of, unconscious of, heedless of, unmindful of, insensible of/to, unheeding of, ignorant of

  5. Repurpose:  (verb) Adapt for use in a different purpose. "they've taken a product that was originally designed for a CD-ROM and repurposed it for the Microsoft Network"

  6. Burrow: (noun) A hole or tunnel dug by a small animal, especially a rabbit, as a dwelling. synonyms:hole, tunnel, warren, dugout, den

  7. Hibernation is a state of inactivity and metabolic depression in endotherms. Hibernation refers to a season of heterothermy that is characterized by low body temperature, slow breathing and heart rate, and low metabolic rate.​

  8. Carbon Footprint: (noun) The amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person, group, etc.

  9. Cooperation (Noun) The process of working together to the same end."they worked in close cooperation with the their teacher" synonyms:collaboration, joint action, combined effort, teamwork, partnership, coordination, liaison, association, synergy

  10. Echo  (noun) A sound or series of sounds caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface back to the listener."the walls threw back the echoes of his footsteps" synonyms:reverberation, reflection, ringing, repetition, repeat "a faint echo of my shout"

Exercises

  1. ​ Add colour to the cartoon picture of the rock garden.

3.  Draw a picture inspired by the ROCKgarden Party! characters, story or message. 

4.  Create a dance that expresses your feeling towards climate change.

5. Write a poem or a song that expresses your feelings, thoughts and observations about climate change. 

6. Write your own story or fable inspired by ROCKgarden Party! 

7. Use your imagination to come up with an invention that will stop climate change ie a smoke stack into outer space. Cars and houses with wind mills and solar panels on them
